Interview the job applicants

Running for Glendale City Council has given me a whole new perspective on the election process, and I have to say that it’s a bit disappointing.
People are quick to criticize politicians and complain about “intrusive” campaign activities, such as signs, mail pieces, radio and TV ads, phone calls and knocks on their door, but those same citizens aren’t interested in researching candidates online, reading about them in the paper, or attending candidate forums or meet-and-greet events. In short, they don’t want to be bothered with elections, but they do want competent and qualified representatives in elected office.
This was really brought home to me recently when an organization near and dear to my heart, WEMAR, the West Maricopa County Association of Realtors, hosted a “Meet the Candidates” luncheon in Glendale. As a member of the WEMAR Board of Directors, I know how hard our Government Affairs Director Liz Recchia and her staff worked to put this event on, and I also know how hard they work representing the interests of our members here in the West Valley. The event was attended by some 30 candidates for local, county and state offices, but I think the candidates outnumbered the members and guests. For an organization with almost 8,000 members, that’s pretty sad.
I’m afraid that the turnout at the WEMAR event is representative of the broader apathy among our citizens.
Folks, if you want good government, you have to hire good people. You’re the boss, and it’s up to you to interview the candidates and select the best ones. Don’t leave it up to someone else to pick them for you. Good government begins with you. Please do your part, and encourage others — especially the complainers — to do theirs, too.
