The heat relief sign goes up in front of The Salvation Army Glendale Corps building at 6010 W. Northern Ave. when the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat warning. The sign was up June 12 and 13 and expected to be up on every day an excessive heat warning is issued.

In response to the latest excessive heat warning issued by the National Weather Service, The Salvation Army Red Shield Survival Squad activated heat relief stations throughout metro Phoenix June 12 and 13, where anyone in need could go for cooling and hydration.
“June 12 and 13, the Red Shield Survival Squad at The Salvation Army Glendale Corps Community Center provided heat relief to 75 people. The total number of people served in metro Phoenix over that two-day span was 1,485,” Scott Johnson, public relations director for The Salvation Army Southwest Division, said.
The Salvation Army Glendale Corps heat relief stations will be open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the summer on any day the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning.
Additionally, mobile hydration units will be dispatched to targeted portions of metro Phoenix that have been identified as areas with high homeless populations and encampments.
“There has been only one heat-associated death confirmed in Maricopa County in 2018, after a record 155 such fatalities in 2017, so we are thankful if our efforts are making a difference,” said Maj. Nancy Dihle, program coordinator of The Salvation Army Metro Phoenix.
“In the five days in which metro Phoenix has been under an excessive heat warning this year, The Salvation Army Red Shield Survival Squad has provided cooling and hydration for 2,849 people, distributing 4,657 bottles of water,” Johnson said.
Following is a list of The Red Shield Survival Squad’s heat relief locations in the West Valley:

  • Avondale — Estrella Mountain Corps, 11 N. Third Ave.
  • Glendale
    • Glendale Corps, 6010 W. Northern Ave.
