Pictured at the $240,000 check presentation are The Salvation Army Glendale Chapter Advisory Board members Joe Charles, Steve Kiest and Bill Kelleher, Maj. Clem Leslie, Maj. Evangeline Leslie, and Advisory Board members Yvonne Knaack, Tom Eggleston and Steve Frate.

The Salvation Army Glendale Chapter Major Clem Leslie credited local Advisory Board member Bill Kelleher with the $500,000 suggestion as a campaign goal. As of June 22, more than half the goal had been reached.
Steven Kiest with the Glendale law firm of Kiest Thurston and O’Brien wrote a check for $240,000 to The Salvation Army Glendale Chapter building fund last Friday at the fellowship hall during a ceremony attended by regional The Salvation Army officials and members of the Glendale Chapter Advisory Board. The donation by Kiest’s law firm brought the total donated to the fund so far to $350,000.
Former Salvation Army Division Commander Joe Posillico recounted a brief history of the building at 6010 W. Northern Ave. He said it was originally built and served as Northwest Hospital in 1960 and was purchased in 1988 by The Salvation Army. Over the years, Salvation Army added new buildings but never dealt with the infrastructure.
“The first question asked was the building worth saving?” Posillico said. “Engineers told us it had good bones.”
In addition to Advisory Board members who attended the June 22 check presentation, Posillico noted two board members who were unable to attend: Gertie Hickman and Diane McCarthy, both honorary chairwomen of the building campaign.
Kiest said, “It’s amazing how the Lord works. We worked on the funds for a while — thankful for that. We hope it’s a major impetus for the campaign.”
