Theater Works offers class in puppetry

For those looking to broaden their performance skills, Theater Works is introducing its first Puppet Works class designed for actors, dancers and anyone who is interested in learning the basics of hand and rod and black light puppetry. The three-session series runs 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 11 and 25 and Sept. 1 and takes participants ages 14 and older through the basics of moveable-mouth hand puppetry through to the development of a black light scene.
During the first week, students will learn the basic manipulation of a movable-mouth, hand and rod puppet into an animated character. They will learn techniques for basic puppetry acting, including voice development and projection, as well as movement and character interaction. A hand and rod movable-mouth puppet will be provided during class time.
In the second week, students will build off previous skills learned and begin to use puppetry acting and character interaction to build short scenes together with classmates. A hand and rod movable-mouth puppet will be provided during class time.
The final week, students will work on polishing their puppetry skills in a black light environment. Every student will get the chance to present his puppetry techniques in a final performance to be presented at the end of class to family and friends.
The class costs $100. To enroll, visit http://theaterworks.org/youth-theater/introduction-to-puppetry/. Theater Works is at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Peoria, 10580 N. 83rd Drive.
