80-year-old nonprofit leader Tom Loegering is riding through 49 states for youths.

How many 80-year-olds would take on a grueling nearly non-stop motorcycle ride through the lower 48 states and Alaska to raise money for a good cause?

The answer is likely “one” and it’s Tom Loegering, owner of Sun City Country Club and founder of Golf Program in Schools, an Arizona nonprofit that introduces youths to the game of golf.

In July, Loegering will ride through the 48 contiguous states and then up to Alaska, where he’ll turn around and do the same in reverse to raise money for Golf Program in Schools. That’s roughly 17,500 miles.

“We are looking for sponsors to donate one penny for every mile I ride within the 20 days,” Loegering said. “I will match the first $1,000 raised.”

Over the last three years, Golf Program in Schools has introduced golf to 16,000 youths in the West Valley. Loegering would like to expand it to reach thousands more students.

Anyone interested in sponsoring the ride can call 623-271-8627 or email tom@suncitycountryclub.org.
