Local teams set to face off

For the first time since 1997 and second time ever, two Glendale schools are playing for the championship at the Mensendick Memorial Girls Junior High Basketball Tournament.

Landmark and Challenger middle schools were slated to battle Feb. 5 for the A Division championship. Results were unavailable at press time.

In the B Division, Desert Valley and Underdown were scheduled to play Feb. 4 for the title. For results, see B5.

PUSD crowns 4 champions

The Peoria Unified School District crowned four elementary school champions last week.

Paseo Verde and Copperwood elementary schools each won their respective conference at the Winter Elementary Boys Basketball District Tournament last week.

Oasis and Oakwood elementary schools, meanwhile, won championships at the PUSD Elementary Girls Softball Tournament.

Paseo Verde won the Copper Conference championship in boys basketball with a victory over Desert Harbor Elementary. Copperwood claimed the Turquoise Conference title with a win over Foothills Elementary.

Oasis beat Coyote Hills Elementary for the Copper Conference championship in the softball tournament. Oakwood beat Desert Palms for the Turquoise title.

Liebeck has big week

Former Mountain Ridge High School pitcher Jered Liebeck made a name for himself nationally this week. The Arizona State University senior right-hander was named Collegiate Baseball's National Pitcher of the Week after tossing a three-hit shutout over Long Beach State.

Former stars honored at ASU

Arizona State University will honor former local softball stars Rosie Andrade and Helen Siggelkow with a display at the Hayden Library, beginning Feb. 10.

Andrade, a receptionist at Independence High School, and her daughter Siggelkow, a 1980 graduate of Apollo High School, each are in the Arizona Softball Hall of Fame. They both finished their careers as players for the Sun City Saints. Andrade made the Hall of Fame in 1976, while Siggelkow was inducted in 2000.

Ironwood wins Coyotes Cup

Ironwood High School became club hockey champions in its first year. The Eagles won the Alltel Ice Den Coyotes Cup last week, beating Saguaro 5-1 in the championship game. Shane Smith notched a hat-trick and Ryan Bristow and Tyler Cooper contributed a goal each. The Coyote Cup tournament is organized by the Arizona High School Hockey Association.
