Despite a threatening rain storm, the Cactus League's 10th season in Peoria got off without a problem in the annual charity game Feb. 27.

The Mariners beat the Padres 6-5 as new Seattle manager Bob Melvin picked up a win in his first game with the Mariners.

Nearly 12,000 tickets were sold for the opener of the Peoria Sports Complex season, but many fans did not show because of threatening weather. Games continue through the end of March.

MARINERS: Wilson out 2 weeks. Mariners catcher Dan Wilson will be sidelined at least two weeks and possibly longer because of a strained stomach muscle on his left side. Wilson hurt himself Feb. 27 while swinging in the batting cage.

n PADRES: Hall of Famer Winfield makes guest appearance. Hall of Fame outfielder and current San Diego Padres vice president Dave Winfield spent March 2 as a guest instructor with the team.

Winfield, wearing his old No. 31, spent 30 minutes addressing outfielders in morning drills with coach Davey Lopes.

n PADRES: 9 players sign deals. The Padres agreed to terms March 3 with nine players for 2003 contracts. Pitchers Adam Eaton, Luther Hackman, Michael Nicolas, Jake Peavy, Dennis Tankersley and Oliver Perez reached terms with the team. Sean Burroughs, Ramon Vasquez, Michael Rivera and outfielder Brian Buchanan also inked deals.
