Martin Vanacour

Former Glendale City Manager, Dr. Martin Vanacour, preferably known as Papa, died Sept. 11, 2016 in Glendale. Mr. Vanacour is survived by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Joyce Vanacour; his daughter, Barbara (Mike) Fisher; son, Jason (Heather) Vanacour; and his five grandchildren, who meant everything to him: Matthew, Lauren, and Emma Fisher, and Johanna and Mari Vanacour; brother-in-law, Allen (Joan) Garr; as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Boris and Martha Vanacour, and his sister, Sandra Cohn.

Mr. Vanacour was born in 1942 in Brooklyn, N.Y. His father was killed in action in WWII. He graduated from SUNY Buffalo with a bachelor’s degree in public administration and went on to get his master’s degree at NYU and his Ph.D from Arizona State University.

He served the City of Glendale for more than 30 years, including serving as city manager for more than 15 years. He was also a professor and taught! at ASU and the University of Phoenix. He loved learning and teaching, but he was most proud of being Papa to his grandkids.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held Sept. 13 at Beth El Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix.
