Clement Carreon Ortega, 85, of Glendale, passed away Dec. 28, 2016. He is preceded in death by his dear wife, Susan, and his siblings, Arlene, Rose, Julia, Ruby and Paul.
Mr. Ortega is survived by his two sons, Marc (Maura) and Larry (Michele); his grandchildren; Robyn (Jordan Espinoza), Max, Nicole, Zackery, and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Damien and Sofia (Robyn). He also leaves behind his dear sisters, Nellie and Charlotte; and his brothers, Peter and Vincent; as well as many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
In his younger days, Mr. Ortega spent many fun hours pitching softball for a semi-pro team in the Valley. He served our nation in the U.S. Marine Corps, where one of his accomplishments was to become a sharpshooter.
He worked nine years at Phoenix West High School, then transferred to a long career at Glendale Community College, where he was an equipment manager for 35 years before retiring in 2000. His time at GCC earned him
a place in the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2005, as well as two National Championship rings for 1988 and 2000 football seasons, and the Distinguished Service Award in 2008.
Mr. Ortega was touched by many people throughout his time at GCC and always remembered those years fondly.
Upon retirement, he spent his time with numerous hobbies and, of course, with his family.
A funeral mass for Mr. Ortega will be Jan. 14 at St. James Roman Catholic Parish, 19640 N. 35th Ave., followed by a celebration of life memorial Jan. 14.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Sage Hospice and Palliative Care, or the Glendale Community College Athletic fund via the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation, where a fund has already been established directly for the GCC Athletic Department (this is a tax deduction/credit).
