Daniel Hunt of Lapeer County, Mich., was killed in action Sept. 28, 1951 in South Korea, while serving in the US Army.
Mr. Hunt was born Feb. 10, 1933 to Ownie and Lillie (White) Hunt. He was one of 17 children. He joined the Army with his brother, John, and was a member of A Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.
Sept. 28, 1951 Hunt’s company was attacked in an area later referred to as Heartbreak Ridge. After a successful defense, A Company withdrew, but Hunt was listed as Missing in Action. During a later investigation, members of Hunt’s unit reported him killed. Feb. 24, 1953, the US Army changed his status to Killed in Action and notified his family. He is now survived by his many nieces and nephews.
Earlier this year, his remains were recovered in South Korea. Hunt will be laid to rest 1 p.m. Dec. 2 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ 85024.
