The trend in August has been fewer total COVID-19 cases.

On Aug. 15, Maricopa County reported 128,187 cumulative positive tests. At the beginning of the month, there were 118,497 cumulative cases in the county. 

The 9,690 cases averaged 646 new positive tests per day in August, a steep decline from the 2,250 new COVID-19 cases per day in Maricopa County in July. The number of new cases in Maricopa County reported Aug. 17 fell to 181, with 413 cases reported Aug. 18.

Glendale 85301 neared 3,000 cases, with neighboring 85303 nearing 2,000.

Just south of Glendale, two Maryvale/West Phoenix ZIP codes topped 3,000 each, according to the state’s COVID-19 tracker.

Peoria 85345 neared 2,000 positive COVID-19 cases. 

According to the county website, “the mask requirement played a critical role in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in Maricopa County.”

The county reported 2,537 cumulative deaths from COVID-19 mid-way into the month, a 25% increase from the 2,016 coronavirus-related deaths reported in the county Aug. 1. 

Deaths in Arizona from COVID-19 increased by 20%, from 3,747 Aug. 1 to 4,492 Aug. 15.
