After an undercover detective was fired at, Glendale Police arrested Johnny Carlos Guzman Jr., 19, and Juan Antonio Borquez, 28.
“Both suspects were currently on probation for other felony offenses,” said Tiffany Ngalula, a police spokeswoman.
She said detectives identified a reported stolen SUV at 67th and Glendale avenues April 9 and followed the vehicle to Litchfield Park/Avondale.
At a roundabout, Glendale resident Borquez, the passenger in the SUV, allegedly fired several shots at a detective’s vehicle.
After the detective, who was not injured, called for assistance, marked police cars stopped the SUV near El Mirage and Indian School roads, about 2 miles from the shooting.
A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from inside the stolen vehicle and methamphetamine was located during the search, Ngalula said.
She said that, when interviewed by detectives, Guzman said he knew the vehicle was “probably” stolen and knew he was being followed by police.
“Guzman indicated he would not have surrendered had the stolen vehicle not run out of gasoline. Borquez admitted to shooting at the detective’s vehicle,” Ngalula said.
Both suspects face drive-by shooting and other felony charges.
