A man “acting erratically” and armed with a spear was shot by police Saturday, Jan. 30.

Jose Santiago, a Glendale Police Department spokesman, said dispatchers received a threatening 911 call around 6 p.m.

“The individual who called was making threatening comments towards police officers and said he was in the area of 59th Avenue just south of Northern (Avenue),” Santiago said.

“An officer arrived on the scene and spotted an individual who was acting erratically. The individual was not only making threatening comments towards the officer, but the suspect was carrying what appears to be a homemade wooden spear-like object.”

Santiago said it was 3 to 4 feet long with a sharp point.

“A second officer arriving on the scene spotted the suspect charging towards the first officer. That secondary officer yelled out commands for the suspect to stop and drop his weapon and when the suspect would not comply that officer fired several shots towards the suspect,” Santiago said.

On Monday, Feb. 1, Santiago identified the suspect as Alexander Mear, 23.

“Mear is currently facing at least two counts of aggravated assault. He is currently recovering from his injuries and is listed in stable condition at a local hospital,” Santiago said.
