A new event is “sprouting” in downtown Glendale this April, with the goal to bring fresh, local produce and handmade goods to Glendale and the West Valley. The new Glendale Farmers Market will kick off the season 8 a.m. to noon April 9 in the parking lot of First United Methodist Church, 7102 N. 58th Drive.

The market will be held at the southwest corner of 58th Drive and Palmaire Avenue, every second and fourth Saturday for the months of April through July, resuming again for the months of September through November. Abundant free covered parking is available in the adjacent parking garage.

“We invite everyone across the Valley to come down on these Saturday mornings to the charming, tree-lined area that is the perfect spot to purchase fresh, locally-farmed produce and browse vendors selling other goods that are also made here locally,” said Linda Moran-Whittley, owner of Papa Ed’s Ice Cream in the Catlin Court Historic District.

The Glendale Farmers Market’s mission is to create a community gathering place in historic downtown Glendale, while supporting local farmers, small businesses and community based organizations, many of which will also be invited to participate in various ways. In addition, the purpose of the market is to provide a marketplace for healthy, nutritious and sustainable foods systems for residents throughout the Valley.

Additional highlights planned for the market include:

• Meeting local farmers, agricultural vendors, and home product vendors

• Food truck specialties and a variety of local eateries

• Handcrafted and one-of-a-kind items for sale

• Community booth with information from area-wide 501(c)(3) organizations, local program resources, services and more

• Educational seminars with information and demonstrations about healthy food choices and how to prepare nutritious meals for all ages

• Guest speakers presenting a variety of topics of interest including history of the area, gardening and art

• Kids activities
