Firefighters collected more than 9,000 pounds of food and necessities over the holiday season to help those less fortunate. Now the focus has shifted to collecting heat relief items such as water, sunscreen and chapstick, as summer months approach.

“The Glendale Firefighters' necessities drive is ongoing and it has been an excellent way to help the community benefit on behalf of the community,” said John Holland, Glendale Fire Captain and Local 493 Glendale Chapter Vice President. “People usually give credit to the firefighters for our efforts, but the credit truly belongs to those who continue to support these endeavors. We're happy to be part of it.”

The effort to collect these items has been named the “Glendale's Hope Heat Relief Drive” and is being sponsored by Glendale's Hope, Glendale Firefigher Charities.

“The Arizona summer heat can be deadly. As firefighters, we'll continue to do the most we can to educate the community with heat safety tips, but these efforts will certainly help,” said Eddie Smith, Glendale Fire Captain and Glendale's Hope President.

The drive is ongoing and donations can be made at any of the following fire stations: Station 151, 6851 N. 52nd Ave.; Station 152, 6850 W. Bethany Home Road; Station 153, 14061 N. 59th Ave.; Station 154, 4439 W. Peoria Ave.; Station 155, 6255 W. Union Hills Drive; Station 156, 6801 W.
