HealthSouth Valley of the Sun Rehabilitation Hospital celebrates National Patient Safety Awareness Week March 13 to 19 to educate the community, patients and their families, clinicians and others on the importance of patient safety in the hospital and at home.

“Patient safety is a top priority and one of the most important aspects in creating a high-quality patient experience,” said HealthSouth Valley of the Sun CEO Beth Bacher. “We know patients have a choice and we work to enhance our culture of safety every day. This week-long event is an excellent opportunity to recognize the importance of safety in our hospital.”

Here are a few ways to increase patient safety, according to the National Patient Safety Foundation:

• Washing your hands is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick and prevent the spread of germs to others.

• Keep a good history of personal and family medical history. Write down illnesses and conditions of family members, in addition to treatments and medications that you have had, and whether they helped or not. Remember to bring them with you to your doctors’ appointments.

• Educate yourself on your medications. Can you identify your medicines when they are not in their containers? How should they be stored and what dosage should you take? What are the side effects?

• Prevent falls by using nightlights in dark areas where you walk, wear skid-free shoes or slippers and clear pathways in the home of clutter.

Patient Safety Awareness Week was initially launched in 2002 and is endorsed by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF), whose mission is to: improve the safety of patients by identifying and creating a core body of knowledge; identify pathways to apply the knowledge; develop and enhance the culture of receptivity to patient safety; raise public awareness and foster communications about patient safety, as well as improve the status of NPSF and its ability to meet its goals.
