A 24-year-old man was arrested after he drove a vehicle into a canal and led Glendale Police in a foot chase July 13.
Glendale Police observed the suspect, 24-year-old Gabino Hernandez of Glendale, hit a curb with his vehicle, and then a street sign and streetlight, according to Sgt. Randy Stewart, Glendale Police public information officer.
The officer called 911 to report the collision and followed the vehicle down the canal. Near the area of 7900 W. San Miguel, Hernandez exited the vehicle while it was moving. The vehicle continued on and crashed and submerged into the canal, Stewart said.
The officer confronted Hernandez, who pulled out a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the officer, but missed, Stewart said. No one was injured. A foot chase ensued from 7900 W. Missouri Avenue. The officer lost sight of Hernandez and a perimeter was set.
Hernandez stole a bicycle in the park nearby and left the area, according to Stewart. A K-9 tracking team located the bicycle and Hernandez’s clothing. He was taken into custody near 7700 W. Medlock Drive after a caller reported seeing him.
Hernandez was booked into jail and is facing aggravated assault charges. Other charges may still be pending, Stewart said.
