New Gila River Arena screens

It’s not as big as the Jumbotron at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T stadium in Arlington, Texas. But, it is three times as large as the scoreboard that no longer will show the scores and replays of the Arizona Coyotes hockey team games at Gila River Arena.

The Arizona Coyotes announced Aug. 16 the club has partnered with the city of Glendale and AEG to purchase and install a Daktronics high definition center-hung display system and auxiliary displays at Gila River Arena. The video board will be ready for the drop of the puck on opening night Oct. 6, when the Coyotes host the Anaheim Ducks. Terms of the purchase are not disclosed pursuant to the agreement.

“One of our core goals as an organization is to provide our great fans with the best experience possible at every one of our games, and we know that this state-of-the-art video board at Gila River Arena will be a game changer in that regard,” Coyotes’ President and CEO Ahron Cohen said. “We are very grateful to the city of Glendale and AEG for partnering with us to create a more dynamic and engaging atmosphere at all of our Coyotes games with the video board.”

“Through the NHL draft and free agency, the Coyotes’ front office has put together one of the most exciting and improved teams in the NHL,” Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps said. “With the scoreboard, and a skilled young team that had one of the best records in the NHL from January on, I am more excited than ever for the start of the new season.”

“We are very excited for this special opportunity to elevate the guest experience, which is just the beginning of further enhancements to the arena,” said Dale Adams, general manager of Gila River Arena and vice president of AEG Facilities. “This is a thrilling time in Glendale and at Gila River Arena, as we continue to add elements to the most exciting and vibrant entertainment district in the country.”

The custom-designed video display weighs approximately 56,000 pounds. The center-hung board features a unique open and curved look with four convex or outward curved high definition video displays along with two lower sideline facing displays.

The rectangle-shaped center-hung system boasts two displays facing the sidelines that each measure 24 feet high by 42 feet wide and feature 6-millimeter line spacing that provide 1080p HD imagery. The two displays facing the goals each measure 16 feet high by 27.5 feet wide and feature 6-millimeter line spacing to provide 720p HD imagery. The center-hung installation combines for 2,896 square feet of active display area.

Each of the displays can highlight live video and replays but can also be divided into multiple windows to show any combination of game information, statistics, animations, sponsor messages and more.

Two additional video displays will be angled out from the bottom of the center-hung configuration to appeal to those fans, players and coaches who are rink side and close to the action. Each display will measure approximately 8.5 feet high by 16 feet wide and feature 6-millimeter line spacing. The displays will supplement content shown on the main video displays.

The Coyotes will begin the 2018-19 NHL season at Dallas on Oct. 4 and return to Gila River Arena for their home opener on Oct. 6 versus Anaheim. For more information on Coyotes tickets, call 480-563-PUCK (7825) or visit
