Northern Crossing

The developer provided a sample of what a hotel could look like at Northern Crossing, a development approved by the Glendale Planning Commission.

The Glendale Planning Commission gave the thumbs-up Sept. 3 to a variety of projects, including one that would bring another hotel and more shops near Desert Diamond Casino West Valley.

The commission approved Palermo, at Northern and 87th avenues, to increase its plan from 27 homes to 46. Glendale City Council will have the final say on the matter.

According to a representative of the developer, “Having nearby housing is really important” due to job growth in the area, particularly Desert Diamond Casino West Valley.

Also in that neighborhood, Northern Crossing is a commercial/lodging development planned on Northern Avenue east of the Loop 101.

The development features a five-story hotel, two retail buildings and a combination of shops and drive-thru restaurants.

According to the developer’s pitch, “the development of vacant and under-utilized land along Northern Avenue. This proposal provides an opportunity for entryway commercial development to the city and will complement the Glendale Sports and Entertainment District, Desert Diamond Casino, Zanjero and Westgate Entertainment District.”

Northeast of the casino, the Village at Thunderbird, the largest request, plans 212 new homes near Greenway Road between 55th and 59th avenues.

Several neighbors spoke against the proposal, citing traffic and overcrowding in the area of Arizona Christian University.

Even so, the planning commission gave its approval for the development.

The commission also gave its recommendation for Modern Ridge Estates, a modest six lots at 53rd Avenue and Beardsley Road, to move ahead.
