Glendale police officers arrested Collin Alexander Jones, an 18-year-old Glendale resident, and charged him with a hit-and-run that killed a 3-year-old boy May 21.
Police responded to an emergency call May 21 near 70th Avenue and West Villa Theresa Drive. According to police, a vehicle drove on the wrong side of the road, where four family members were riding bicycles single file.
A Jeep driven by Jones drove over a child trailer being towed by the father’s bicycle, said Tiffany Ngalula, a Glendale Police spokeswoman.
“The vehicle continued and struck the mother on her bicycle, knocking her to the ground,” Ngalula said.
Neighbors came to the family’s aid and began performing CPR on the young boy before police and Glendale Fire Department responders arrived, Ngalula said.
The boy was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Ngalula said Jones’ vehicle was found parked a few blocks away.
“Jones told investigators that he drifted too far to the left and jerked the wheel back to the right and felt his tires drive into the gravel but said when he looked up he ‘saw nothing’ and ‘heard nothing.’
“Detectives were able to process evidence from the scene and the vehicle to develop probable cause,” Ngalula said. She said there was also video evidence of the fatal accident.
Jones was arrested June 4 and charged with manslaughter, failure to stop after a collision that results in death and one leaving the scene of an injury accident.
