Walmart has donated $5,000 to Relay For Life of Glendale, a fundraising campaign benefiting the American Cancer Society. The donation was presented during a special ceremony at Glendale’s Walmart Supercenter, 5605 W. Northern Ave.

“Many of our associates and customers have been touched by cancer. That’s why those of us at Walmart are proud to support the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which is helping lead the fight against cancer,” said Paula Ginnett, Walmart vice president and regional general manager.

“With this donation, Walmart is happy to assist Relay For Life in funding critical cancer research, education and prevention efforts and support services needed in the battle against this terrible disease,” Ginnett said.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the world’s largest fundraising event targeting cancer. Since its beginning in 1985, Relay For Life has raised nearly $5 billion worldwide to fight cancer.

More than four million Relay participants across 24 counties have helped the American Cancer Society raise money in the fight against a disease that remains the second leading cause of death in the U.S.

"I am truly amazed at the donation and support Walmart has given us,” said Kali Knaack, event lead for Relay For Life of Glendale. “Our goal is to make Relay For Life one of Glendale's largest community events, and having Walmart as our presenting sponsor and participating team plays a tremendous role in reaching that goal."

Relay For Life involves a 24-hour, community fundraising walk. Teams of participants camp out around a track, taking turns walking for pledged donations. Food, games and other activities make for a fun day and night devoted to a great cause.
