Two Glendale Union High School District individuals and two teams claimed state titles this AIA fall athletic season.
Here is a list of the area’s high finishers at the respective sports’ state playoffs:
Jordan Ludwig of Washington High claimed back-to-back D2 state championships in her senior year. Ludwig swept the entire tournament without dropping a set en route to hoisting the trophy.
Sofia Lovesy of Sunnyslope was Ludwig’s opponent in the final, claiming second place as a senior. Rounding out the top four was Deer Valley senior Sara Roskelly at fourth.
In Division 1, Kaitlin Tucay and Morgan Pearson claimed fourth in the individual doubles tournament.
Mountain Ridge reached the D1 semifinals before falling to eventual-champion Perry. The Mountain Lions were the only team to take any individual points off of the Pumas in the tournament.
In Division 2, Ironwood reached the semifinals. Sunnyslope reached the quarterfinals, as did Washington.
Mountain Ridge’s Hunter Krasa took third place in the D1 boys’ title race, and teammate Austin Clayton placed tenth.
Gilbert Olivas of Cactus took seventh in the Division 3 boys’ race, and Jenessie German took seventh in the girls’ race.
In Division 4, Glendale Prep took second as a team, and Griffin Ani Durell took third individually.
6A: Mountain Ridge surprised the state en route to a 5-5 regular-season record and reached the first round of the playoffs before falling to Perry.
5A: Ironwood and Sunnyslope both reached the first round.
4A: Cactus reached the semifinal before falling by a single point to eventual-champion Mesquite, Peoria reached the quarterfinals and Greenway and Glendale fell in the first round.
Kara Church of Mountain Ridge claimed second place in both the 200 and 500 freestyle.
- Tate Bahti of Sunnyslope claimed the D2 100 freestyle girls’ championship.

- Colby Raffel – Sunnyslope – 200 freestyle, boys’ third place
- Tate Bahti – Sunnyslope – 200 IM, boys’ third place
- Kristen Keeble – Sunnyslope – 50 freestyle, girls’ second place
- 200 free relay – Sunnyslope, boys’ third place
Sunnyslope defeated Millennium in the 5A title match. Ironwood reached the first round of the playoffs.
Greenway defeated Estrella Foothills. Deer Valley reached the semifinals and Cactus reached the first round of the playoffs.
Daniel Thompson of Thunderbird took second place in the boys’ D2 state championship tournament.
