Glendale and Peoria teams advanced to this weekend’s high school football championship games.
In the 5A bracket, top-seeded Sunrise Mountain and sixth-seeded Ironwood play for the title at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at North Canyon High School.
Sunrise Mountain cruised to a 28-3 win over Campo Verde Dec. 4. Tommy Arnold ran for three touchdowns and Brandon Bogard scored the fourth for Sunrise Mountain in its semifinal, with the defense crushing Campo Verde.
In the other semifinal, Ironwood took down Notre Dame Prep 41-22.
Senior quarterback William Haskell has led Ironwood, passing for 19 touchdowns while also being the Eagles’ leading rusher.
After a dominant, 35-12 win over top-seeded Casa Grande, Cactus High faces Mesquite in the 4A championship game at 7 p.m. Dec. 11.
In the semifinal win, Aki Pulu scored on a 31-yard dash to put Cactus High in the lead. Pulu scored again in the second quarter from 25 yards. A touchdown run by quarterback Will Galvan put Cactus up 21-0 at the half.
Galvan, a sophomore quarterback, leads the potent Cobras offense in the title game at Highland High School.
In the Open Division, Liberty High again went for the “kill shot” but came up short in the semifinal against powerhouse Chandler. Coach Colin Thomas went for a two-point conversion late in the game the week before against Centennial, with senior quarterback Brock Mast pulling it off for a thrilling win.
In overtime against Chandler, trailing by seven points, Mast converted on a fourth-and-goal to bring Liberty within a point.
Rather than kicking the extra point for a tie, Thomas again called for a two-point try. But Mast’s pass went incomplete, ending Liberty’s season.
