Deer Valley’s Jacob Swift just can’t seem to lose, no matter what weight class he moves to.
After wining state titles as a 126-pound freshman and a 138-pound sophomore, Swift moved to 152 pounds this year.
Different weight class, same result, as Swift cruised to his third state title with a finals pin-fall victory over Cave Creek’s Parker Hawk in the second round.
He won three matches by pin-fall to finish the year 54-0. His 116 straight wins currently ranks as the sixth longest streak in Arizona history.
Apollo was also the top team from Glendale, finishing 17th, as Swift led Deer Valley to 18th in Division II.
Yuma Cibola won the Division II team title while Liberty finished second. Mesa Mountain View (93) was third, Goodyear Desert Edge (80) fourth and Vail Cienega (79.5) fifth. Kellis finished 22nd, Ironwood 23rd and Glendale 24th in Division II.
Apollo’s Ben Ramos finished second at 106 pounds, falling in the finals by a 5-4 decision to Tucson Cholla’s Jesus Urqidez.
Kellis’ Jason Zuckerman, after falling in the first round, rebounded and battled through five matches to place third. Zuckerman defeated Liberty’s Jake Dale in the third place match by a 4-1 decision.
Ironwood placed two wrestlers, as Austin Chatwood finished fifth with a pin-fall over Cienega’s Skyler Cavanaugh 1:31 into the match.
Ironwood’s Jatory Winters finished sixth, falling to Javier Pro of Desert Edge in the fifth place match by a 9-0 decision.
Apollo’s Tazmen Roe, an early favorite to place at this year’s match, finished sixth, falling in the fifth-place match to Andrew Vera of Cienega by a 7-3 decision.
In Division I, Mountain Ridge was the highest local place, finishing 15th. Mesa Mountain View won the Division I title with 193 points. Sunnyside (158) finished second, Ironwood Ridge (118.5) third, Red Mountain (109.0) fourth and Desert Vista (91) fifth.
Mountain Ridge had two wrestlers place, as Matthew Hutka finished fourth at 285 pounds, falling by pin-fall in the first round.
Mountain Ridge’s Nathan Suwyn finished fifth, defeating Corona del Sol’s Ryan Spadafore by a 3-2 decision.
Jarod Breeser of the Mountain Lions finished sixth, falling in the fifth round match by 11-7 decision to Corona del Sol’s Marc Farina.
